Mountains And Inns In The Carinthian Alps

You want to get in shape for the traditional Großglockner Trail Race? So, mountain village Heiligenblut is the ideal place for you. Take advantage of 40 kilometres of hiking and running trails. Check your progress at the trail race measurement station at Schareck Panomrana Restaurant.
The hiking network leads you through wildflower meadows, along waterfalls of the Nature Reserve Nationalpark Hohe Tauern. When you reach the summit, you will have a most rewarding view of Großglockner and the surrounding high-alpine region with more than 40 mountains higher than 3,000m.

The three top viewpoints for taking photos:

  • Heiligenblut village at  1,301m above sea level
  • Schareck at 2,604 m above sea level
  • Franz-Josefs-Höhe at 2,451 m above sea level

Get Smart By Hiking Through Hohen Tauern

Geotrail in Hohe Tauern is a unique hiking trail. You wonder why? Because the geological nature studies path runs directly along the main chain of the Alps at an altitude of 2,500 m. And you do not have to go up and down a lot. Enjoy this impressive tour offering marvellous panorama and stunning geological impressions.

From Schareck To Hochtor And Kasereck

Hikes At Geotrail

Hiking along the main ridge of Hohe Tauern is a special adventure. Geotrail leads you to Hochtor and offers fascinating geological peculiarities of the area. It is an interesting path for young and old. At Hochtor you continue to Wallackhaus. You have to be sure-footed and you shouldn't have issues with vertigo.
When you arrive at Panoramabahn lift you can decide whether you walk down (approx. 2 hrs.) or you take the lift back to Schareckbahn valley station.

If you want to take your little ones for a short, but beautiful hike, then the 30-minute-hike from Schareck to Panoramabahn Lift is the perfect option. Most of the way leads downhill.

From Schareck To Heiligenblut

Nice Panorama Tour - Naturgefahrentrail


  • duration: approx. 3 hrs.
  • level of difficulty: medium

Naturgefahrentrail runs always downhill along alpine pastures to Heiligenblut. Enjoy the breath-taking views of the surrounding mountains.  Display boards inform you about alpine dangers. 

Alternative hike: From Schareck you can also hike down to Rossbach mid-station and then take the lift to the valley.

From Schareck To Fleißtal And Heiligenblut

To The Imposing Valley End


  • duration: approx. 5 hrs.
  • level of difficulty: medium to difficult (good fitness necessary)

This hike offers special geological peculiarities. The sections are very diversified and lead you to the impressive valley end of Großes Fleisstal (Hocharn-west face). Explore the beautiful flora of Fleisstal. If you are lucky you may even detect an Edelweiss. But you are not allowed to pick it. They are protected species.
Colourful diversity accompanies you down to Heiligenblut – red alpine rose, blue gentian or pink “steinnagerl” – enjoy this demanding hike across lush green alpine pastures.

Alternative Hike: Schareck – Fleisstal – Alter Pocher


  • duration: approx. 3 hrs.
  • level of difficulty: medium

Shortened hike through Fleisstal, turn left at the junction through Kleines Fleisstal up to Alten Pocher at 1,807 m. Enjoy mountain impressions and perfect views of the Carinthian Alps. You can also visit a placer mining facility and an exhibition of minerals.
Tip: Take the time to visit the gold mining village. The gold pros are happy to answer all your questions about the 700-year-long history of gold mining in this area!
